Generally, anal sex is not depicted in Greek homoerotic art since it was not well regarded (at least not in Archaic and Classical Athens, where it was seen as abusive). Here may be an exception to the rule. The young naked athlete climbing onto the lap of the older athlete can be doing little else than getting ready to sit on the penis of his companion. The two young lovers are close in age, and dressed (or undressed) alike, as they wear similar wreaths on their heads. Today we would think of them as two gay boys. The man watching them (Is he surprised? Is he jealous?) may be a trainer, as he is dressed, which seems to put him out of the game. But he certainly seems fascinated by the sight of the two boys about to have sex. Voyeurism was en vogue even in antiquity. |
